Alcove for the Grid Wall

I designed an alcove component which plugs into the grid wall. This is just one possible configuration for the grid wall, but I had this in my mind while I was designing the grid wall, so naturally this is the first plug-in available. It makes a work space along a wall, enabling someone to claim some territory in a family home without isolating themselves by working in an office. This configuration doubles as a book shelf, which is one of the easiest configurations to design for the grid wall.

You actually inhabit the inside of the wall with the seat provided. There is also a surface to do a task on such as using a laptop.

I originally thought that any module for the wall could easily plug into the horizontal struts, but in designing this model I have learned that it is not always the case. Therefore, the seat was a completely new detail that I came up with, as well as the table top. We will see how they function after they are prototyped in physical form.

There are no horizontal members where the seat needed to go, so this detail takes advantage of the existing structure, something I didn’t think I would need to do.

This shelf also takes advantage of some holes that I didn’t imagine utilizing earlier.

I made this design mostly because, as of right now, the grid wall doesn’t have any components for it. This will at least be something to illustrate a few capabilities of the wall.

In the near future, I will be working on making the wall and it’s components parametric. I will be working with Sketchup’s dynamic components in order to allow an easy interface to edit the length, width and height of the components.Maybe it could even provide someone with the tools to create new components without really knowing how to use 3d modeling.
